Race Unity Speech Awards - with David and Sandra Brown Carr

David and Sandra Brown Carr present a special report about the annual Race Unity Speech Awards, which began in 2001, when the New Zealand Bahá’í community initiated and organised the Awards in support of Race Relations Day. Initially held just in Auckland, the Awards have now spread to the rest of the country, including here in Hawke’s Bay.

This year, the topic of the Race Unity Speech Awards is: KIA KOTAHI TE HOE - PADDLE AS ONE.

David and Sandra Brown Carr present another special report on the Race Unity Speech Awards.  They’re an annual national contest for senior high school students in years 11, 12, and 13.

In this programme, David will talk with the 2021 Hawke’s Bay regional winner, Lena Ormsby, a year 11 student from Karamu High School, about her views on race relations in Aotearoa.

David will also chat by Zoom with an old friend of his, Bev Watson, about the past, present, and future of the Race Unity Speech Awards.  Bev has been involved in the Awards from their very start.

You can also hear the speech from the national winner of the 2021 Speech Awards, Lucia-Tui Bernards from Tawa College, Wellington.
